SEARCH MEDICAL INFORMATION

Apart from the general medical websites that appear under the resource section of the website, there are specific websites dedicated to researching the medical literature for answers that are hard to find on general medical websites or on textbooks.
These are the same tools that physicians and researchers use to search for information.
Below is a suggested strategy on searching the medical literature.
An informed family is makes for a great partner in caring for your child. All these websites are free

STEP #1
This is a good place to start since it will give you a flavor of everything that’s out on cyberspace about a certain topic. If your inquiry is very general this may be the only step you need to take
Google
Other General Search Engines

STEP #2
These websites also offer a general review of each topic
Merck Manual   http://www.merck.com/mmhe/index.html
Emedicine: http://www.emedicine.com/
Webmd: http://www.webmd.com/

STEP#3
If you still have not found the answer or have a very specific question you may want to research the published scientific literature (medical journals) from all over the world.
Pubmed  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/
This is a powerful tool that puts at your fingertips all the published medical knowledge. There is a tutorial to make sure you take advantage of all it’s features. If there is an article relevant, it will show a small summary (abstract). Some journals show the full text and some you have to go to the journal website to view the full article.

Google Scholar
Very similar to pubmed. To access it you go to Google.com and under advanced search you click Scholar. It also searches all scientific journals.

www.freemedicaljournals.com
Has a collection of many medical journals where the content is available free of charge. If you find an article on pubmed

If you have questions about your search, that’s where I can be of help as an information broker trying to sort out the useful information.
